Its been a really busy 10 days since arriving in Thailand. We arrived in Bangkok on the back of a 13 hour journey from Cambodia which seems to have happened so long ago now. We hung out for half a day then headed to Chaing Mai in north Thailand. We went to do a a 3 day jungle trek from 25th December. We also hoped to get away from Christmas for the first time which proved impossible because even though this area of the world are not Christian they really get into it. From the beginning of December all though Cambodia and Thailand Christmas decorations and trees were everywhere. Chaing Mai was no different so on Christmas eve we went for a great dinner at Gingers restaurant which included a Thai santa baring gifts, carols, hot wine and cookies. I found a radio station playing operatic Christmas songs which added to the festivities in the baking hot weather.
We headed to the jungle on 25th with 7 others from Birmingham [a strange coincidence], Germany, Hong Kong and Singapore. A great bunch of people and what an adventure it was.

1st day - elephants ride [ours was the greediest creature I have ever met, after Carla] 3 hour trek to mountain hill tribe [Karen tribe]. We stayed in bamboo huts with only blankets and a sleeping bag for a bed and I near froze at 3am. The mountain temperature in radically lower than the rest of Thailand. It was easily 5 - 8 degrees. COLDDDDDDD
2nd Day - walk bloody miles, up and down hills, through leach infested jungle and ended up with another hill tribe.
3rd - Bamboo rafting down the river and a final trek to the van for a 4 hour journey back to Chaing Mai.
A real adventure and likely to be the highlight of the Thailand for me.
Bangkok is an amazing city and we had to be here for new year. We started the evening in the World Plaza where all the official street parties and the count down happen where we had a glass of bubbles. We then headed back to the Kowsan Road [where we are staying and most of the travellers stay] but its really terrible and I hate it around here so we went to a jazz and blues bar with live music and we danced the night away to the band. We drank a little bit wobbly juice and lets say everyone knew us by the time we left. So much fun. When we got back to the Kowsan Road the tourists had been fighting with each other and it seemed most of Bangkok's teenagers were hanging out. Bed at 3am for me, Emma past out a little before that.
We have stayed in bed all day watching TV movies!!!! bliss.
So our dear family and friends have a great 2009. We plan on it.
